Australians prefer renewables, not nuclear energy

Renewables favoured over nuclear: Newspoll ecogeneration 29 Dec 09 December 29, 2009

Australians strongly favour renewable energy as a government priority over nuclear energy, according to a recent Newspoll survey.

The survey, commissioned by the Clean Energy Council (CEC) showed that 80 per cent of respondents supported renewable energy as a priority, compared with only 15 per cent in favour of nuclear energy.

A majority of 93 per cent supported the Federal Government’s development of renewable energy, whereas only 49 per cent also showed support for the deployment of nuclear energy.

“This confirms what we have thought for some time – you need to exhaust every other alternative before talking about nuclear energy as a climate change solution for Australia,” said CEC Chief Executive Matthew Warren.

“The answers in this poll show that some people may express support for nuclear power in principle, but four out of every five people would prefer to see an effective renewable energy strategy as a priority.”
