Fremantle Anti Nuclear group (FANG) join international walk to the U.N.
While nuclear disarmament is something we should all be concerned about, we also need to look at the whole cycle of the nuclear industry. Nuclear weapons are the final product of an industry that has destroyed Indigenous peoples lands through out the world, caused the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of people and left whole cities uninhabited. There is no “Peaceful Use” of nuclear technology
Fremantle Anti Nuclear Group (FANG) members, Marcus Atkinson and Kerrie-Ann Garlick are heading to the United Sates to join with U.S based group Footprints for Peace to walk to the United Nations.
The International Peace Walk – Towards a Nuclear Free Future is a three month walk that will begin on February 11th from the Y-12 Nuclear Weapons Facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The walk will follow a route where communities and the environment are being affected by the nuclear industry. This will include the notorious Three Mile Island nuclear reactor site.
The walk will then finish at the United Nations in New York for the beginning of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference (NPT) on May 2nd 2010. This review conference happens every five years and momentum is now building around the world for negotiations to move forward the agenda of nuclear disarmament.
FANG member Marcus Atkinson says “While nuclear disarmament is something we should all be concerned about, we also need to look at the whole cycle of the nuclear industry. Nuclear weapons are the final product of an industry that has destroyed Indigenous peoples lands through out the world, caused the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of people and left whole cities uninhabited. There is no “Peaceful Use” of nuclear technology as the process from the very beginning of the cycle is so destructive, and heavily reliant on fossil fuels, CFC’s and chemical products that it can never be truly seen as our solution to climate change.”
The City of Fremantle has long been a Mayors for Peace city and Mayor Brad Pettitt commented “It is great to see Fremantle community members taking the peace message internationally. I believe Footprints for Peace will be one more step towards a world free of nuclear weapons”.
Fremantle-based Greens Senator Scott Ludlam is attending part of the NPT conference and will join the walk as it arrives in New York City. “This is a crucial year in the 65-year campaign to abolish nuclear weapons. The walkers will bring together people from around the world to bring the essential message of abolition to policymakers and diplomats. I look forward to joining them.”
Marcus Atkinson added “ For those of you who can not make it to the United States to be a part of this walk, there will also be a women’s walk from Brisbane to Canberra in solidarity with the walk happening in the United States.
