Martin Ferguson secretive about nuclear waste dump plan
Ferguson tight-lipped on nuclear dump talks, By Melinda James, ABC News, Mar 3, 2010
The federal Resources Minister will not reveal if he is meeting with any of the traditional owners of Muckaty Station, which has been slated as the site for a national nuclear waste dump. The Government last week announced Muckaty Station, 100 kilometres north of Tennant Creek, as its preferred site for the radioactive waste repository.
It was the only location in Australia that had been volunteered by traditional owners, via the Northern Land Council, although some of the traditional owners in the area are not happy with the plan.
The ABC understands Mr Ferguson will meet in Darwin today with traditional owners who are signatories to the Muckaty agreement.
But Mr Ferguson would only confirm that he is going to the opening of a helium plant and meeting with the Northern Territory Chief Minister, Paul Henderson….He also said that he was not going to attend a public meeting in Tennant Creek tonight about the waste dump…..The Greens have asked Mr Ferguson to ensure a Senate inquiry into the radioactive waste management bill has a hearing in Tennant Creek but the minister says that is not up to him……”But I also might remind you this is a bill which goes to a national process.
“It’s just not about the Northern Territory.”
