The Senate committee in charge of the inquiry into the Federal Government’s proposed nuclear waste dump legislation has decided not to hold hearings in Tennant Creek.
Public hearings will be held in Darwin and Canberra, but not in Central Australia, where the Government is planning to put the dump.
The proposed site is in the electorate of the Territory Labor Member for Barkly, Gerry McCarthy, who disagrees with the Federal Labor Party’s decision.
“It’s extremely disappointing news,” Mr McCarthy said.
“It doesn’t stop our fight and it doesn’t stop our resolve to oppose this nuclear waste facility that’s being imposed on the Barkly and on the Territory.
“So we’ll continue our fight.”
