Australia waits for renewable energy legislation

Growth in Australia’s renewable energy sector has slowed to a snail’s pace as the project developers wait for certainty.

Australia parliament debates amended green power laws Reuters 2 June 2010,  – Laws to overhaul Australia’s renewable energy scheme were introduced into parliament on Wednesday in a move that should reassure industry and underpin billions of dollars in investments.

The laws are expected to pass a vote in the Senate in the coming weeks, a step that would be a rare victory for Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s otherwise stalled efforts to fight climate change and a boost ahead of elections later this year.

Australia has laws to ensure 20 percent of electricity comes from renewable energy by 2020 and the three bills introduced into the lower house of parliament will refine this by splitting the scheme to separate the small-scale household market from larger renewable energy projects.

The new arrangements will start in January 2011………..

Australia, one of the largest per-capita emitters of greenhouse gases, last year introduced a scheme to lower reliance on coal-fired electricity and set a target 45,000 gigawatt hours of clean power, or 20 percent of energy, over the next decade. But the value of RECs had plummeted because the government used the scheme to reward households that installed solar hot water panels and heat pumps, flooding the market with cheap certificates and reducing their worth to large-scale projects.

Growth in Australia’s renewable energy sector has slowed to a snail’s pace as the project developers wait for certainty.

One of the country’s biggest proposed windfarm projects, an A$800 million development planned by the country’s largest energy retailer, AGL Energy, has been put on hold until the changes to the country’s renewable energy laws are stamped by parliament.

  1. Each has their own thoughts on this matter, here are mine:

What is needed are energy systems that are inexpensive, clean, and self contained, do not rely on fossil fuels and can be developed and maintained locally. You think I am dreaming I can feel that in my bones! Yet over the past (give or take ) hundred years or so, scientists, inventors and various curious people, have developed ideas and innovations, that would help us move totally away from our reliance on the presently accepted norms of oil, coal and gas – aka ‘fossil fuels’. Consider the work of Nikola Telsa and Stanley Meyer for starters!

If our governments are sincere in their attempt to reduce carbon emissions, and also reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, then why have they hidden this information from us? It is known that they have had knowledge of most of these innovations and scientific discoveries for a very long time. How do you define ‘sincerity’? Or better still can you say ‘sincerity’ and ‘government’ in the one breathe? An oxymoron!

  2. if justmeint is dreaming – then I reckon he/she is having some kind of group dream – shared by millions.
    I certainly share that dream.

And for Australia – I have one special theme of the dream.
It IS possible to have local solar-powered air-conditioning.

Why on Earth can’t we have a Global Warming solution to fight global warming – the hotter the sun, the more energy for everyone’s solar-powered air conditioning – local energy from each roof?

Politicians must be threatened by the people – with the one threat that they fear – the loss of their jobs.
They are indeed sincere about just one thing – hanging on to their seats in Parliament
