Pre election, Abbott dancing around on nuclear power
“We have no plans to promote nuclear power. We have no plans for local plebiscites. Nuclear power is not on the agenda at this time and I have no plans to put it on the agenda,” Mr Abbott said.
Poll-conscious Abbott dodges nuclear issue, Stock & Land, 13 Jul, 2010 OPPOSITION Leader Tony Abbott has been forced to rule out going to the federal election with any plans to promote the use of nuclear power as a solution to climate change despite support by some Liberal and National members of Parliament. Mr Abbott has previously had an open mind on the use of nuclear energy, and called for a debate on its future domestic use soon after he became Opposition Leader late last year, The Australian Financial Review reports.
Liberal senator Guy Barnett has called for nuclear power. “Tasmania could also lead the way on nuclear power to be a clean-energy world leader,” he said.
Nationals senator Barnaby Joyce has also been in favour of nuclear power.
But with an election looming and following reports the Liberals could be examining a series of plebiscites on the issue, Mr Abbott yesterday moved to harden the opposition’s stance on the issue.
“We have no plans to promote nuclear power. We have no plans for local plebiscites. Nuclear power is not on the agenda at this time and I have no plans to put it on the agenda,” Mr Abbott said.
