  • Isobel Redmond vows to block uranium mining in the Arkaroola mining  Adelaide Now, Daniel Wills,  September 14, 2010 OPPOSITION Leader Isobel Redmond has declared her party will block any future moves to allow uranium mining in the Arkaroola Wildness Sanctuary. Mining company Marathon Resources has been granted an exploration licence in the region, which is located about 400km east of Roxby Downs in the state’s north.Ms Redmond today revealed her party would oppose plans to remove existing environmental protections and “open the door for miners” at Arkaroola.

The move has been partially backed by the state Greens, who also oppose mining in the region.

However, the two parties differed on the appropriate legislative mechanism to protect the area.

“The state Liberal Party has decided very clearly that it will reject any move by the State Government to change the environmental status of Arkaroola,” Ms Redmond said today.

“We will move to introduce legislation to make sure that the protections in place can’t be removed by the Government.”

Ms Redmond indicated the Liberals would seek to amend development laws to safeguard Arkaroola, while the Greens have proposed a Bill to change mining laws.

“I think we are at one as far as our wish to protect the Arkaroola wilderness,” she said.

“Arkaroola is a very special place and needs protection.”
