King Island shows the way to 100% renewable energy

The project will use leading edge technology to integrate wind, solar and storage capacity into the local grid…..“It will enable King Island to operate as a 100 per cent renewable system when wind and solar conditions allow…..“It will show the rest of Australia and the world the potential for renewable energy to contribute significantly to more sustainable and lower carbon-intensive power systems.

Renewable Energy Project Launched on King Island (Tasmania) The Premier David Bartlett today announced the go ahead of a world-leading renewable energy project which will put King Island well on the way to electricity independence.

Mr Bartlett said the project costing up to $45 million would see almost two thirds of King Island’s energy needs powered from renewable sources.

This will significantly cut the island’s reliance on imported diesel fuel to generate electricity which is both expensive and high in carbon emissions,” Mr Bartlett said.

The project will use leading edge technology to integrate wind, solar and storage capacity into the local grid.

Mr Bartlett said it would involve the expansion of wind generation combined with the new energy storage techniques and smart grid technology to maximise the island’s natural advantages.

It will enable King Island to operate as a 100 per cent renewable system when wind and solar conditions allow.

It is a giant step forward given it wasn’t that long ago the island’s entire electricity supply was generated from diesel fuel…………..

Mr Bartlett said the Government had also allocated $500,000 for the establishment of a centre of renewable energy excellence on King Island.

The initiatives on King Island will demonstrate the potential of renewable energy for communities isolated from mainstream electricity grids.

This project also confirms Tasmania’s status as a world leader in renewable energy.

It will show the rest of Australia and the world the potential for renewable energy to contribute significantly to more sustainable and lower carbon-intensive power systems.

The King Island Renewable Energy Integration Project is being funded jointly by the State and Federal Governments under the Renewable Energy Demonstration Program.
