Nude scans on agenda, | NT News , DAVID WOOD | December 15th, 2010 THE Federal Government has not ruled out installing scanners that create “nude” images of passengers in Darwin airport.

Full-body scanners will be installed in Australian airports by the end of 2011, potentially using the same technology that has caused angst in the US.

The scanners use low-level radiation to create what resembles a nude image of the screened passengers to uncover weapons or contraband hidden beneath clothing.

The scanners cannot penetrate the skin or reveal items hidden inside the body.

People who refuse are subjected to a “pat down” by security where their genitals are touched through their clothes. There is also debate about health risks associated with the process.

The scanners were trialled in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney in 2008……..

Australian Federation of Air Pilots industrial relations manager Lawrie Cox said members were were being consulted about the scanners.

“We are concerned about radiation and how it has been reported and we in turn want to have full transparency of their introduction,” he said.
