Minchin blasts Flinders Ranges mining permit, Sydney Morning Herald, February 7, 2011 Uranium explorer Marathon Resources has had its licence renewed to operate in the sensitive Arkaroola region of South Australia’s Flinders Ranges. The company announced the decision to the stock exchange on Monday prompting criticism from the Wilderness Society and South Australian Liberal Senator Nick Minchin.
Senator Minchin described it as one of the most reckless decisions of the state Labor government.
“It is incomprehensible that this Labor government can so wantonly put at risk one of the most extraordinary and invaluable natural wonders in Australia, by renewing Marathon’s licence,” he said…….
Marathon’s operations in the Flinders were suspended after it was found to have improperly disposed of waste in the area in 2008.
Wilderness Society environmental scientist Matt Turner said most South Australians were opposed to mining in Arkaroola.
“South Australians have made it clear that despoiling an iconic wilderness, mining a unique geological monument and harming a successful tourism business borders on vandalism,” he said.
“It is in the national and state interest for the government to protect Arkaroola.”
