Community opposition to Angela Pamela uranium mine, hypocrisy of politicians

The desperate tone of the emails simply proves the effectiveness of the concerted community opposition to the dirty, dangerous uranium mine at Angela Pamela…..The Arid Lands Environment Centre, the Environment Centre NT and Families for a Nuclear Free Future continue to call for the Angela Pamela site to be permanently protected from uranium mining by declaring the area reserved land under s112 of the Minerals Titles Act.

Conlan/Cameco collusion proves power of community opposition The Arid Lands Environment Centre is not surprised by the conspiratorial content of the leaked email’s between the CLP’s Matt Conlan and Cameco’s Stephan Stander. The desperate tone of the emails simply proves the effectiveness of the concerted community opposition to the dirty, dangerous uranium mine at Angela Pamela.

The timing of the emails coincides with the well -attended public launch on Friday December 4th 2009, of Wiya! Angela Pamela, the anti-mine protect song by the Super Raelene Bros and Arrernte elders from the Little Sisters Collective. Conlan was wrong to think paid pro-mine ads could ‘outmuscle’ sustained community opposition from all walks of life in the town.

Both the CLP and Labor have long been supporters of a nuclear future for the Territory. The back-flip by both parties on Angela Pamela during the Araluen by-election campaign was welcome, but the commitment of both parties to this new policy position remains uncertain. All Labor did was put out a press release. The CLP wouldn’t even do that. Cameco still has an exploration permit and can apply to the federal government to start a mine. No Territory  law has changed preventing a mine going ahead.

The Arid Lands Environment Centre, the Environment Centre NT and Families for a Nuclear Free Future continue to call for the Angela Pamela site to be permanently protected from uranium mining by declaring the area reserved land under s112 of the Minerals Titles Act.

Until uranium mining is permanently banned at Angela Pamela, the residents of Alice Springs will continue to live with the threat of radioactive disaster waiting to happen at their backdoor.
