Penny Wong rejects uranium push as key MPs back expansion of industry * By Christopher Russell , The Advertiser * March 22, 2011 , SENIOR federal South Australian minister Penny Wong has warned against the state becoming involved in the nuclear enrichment industry. Senator Wong, a former climate change minister, said on ABC radio that enriching uranium or even having nuclear power stations was “not the sort of vision I want for SA”.
She was commenting on calls by Mines Minister Tom Koutsantonis and former Treasurer Kevin Foley for the expansion of Australia’s nuclear industry, AdelaideNow reports.
Their calls put them at odds with Premier Mike Rann who has consistently opposed nuclear power stations and any unclear enrichment industry…….
“But nuclear enrichment is not the way to go,” she said. “We don’t need nuclear power in this country where we have an abundance of renewable energy resources.
“This is not the sort of vision we need for this state.”
Senator Wong said the federal party’s position was quite clear and suspected the position of many people in the community was also clear in opposing any expansion of the nuclear industry.
She said solar and wind energy as well as the potential for geothermal energy needed to be considered. “We do have these resources and we should use them,” she said.
“We have had an underinvestment in the energy sector.”
Senator Wong said setting a carbon price would give investors certainty. She said it would give an incentive to investors to look to cleaner energy.
