Carbon tax good for jobs
Carbon emissions cut good for jobs: Combet, Latrobe Valley Express, BY JARROD WHITTAKER, 18 Apr, TAKING action to cut carbon emissions will be good for jobs and boost investment in renewable energy, according to Climate Change Minister Greg Combet.
Mr Combet told The Express the Federal Government’s proposed carbon tax would work by placing a price on every tonne of pollution which is produced and would be paid by “less than 1000 companies that are the largest polluters in our economy”.”The latest data shows that the 50 largest polluters account for over 50 per cent of Australia’s carbon pollution,” Mr Combet said.”If you exclude sectors that will not be covered by the carbon price, the 50 largest polluters will be responsible for around two thirds of carbon liabilities.”Mr Combet’s list of 50 biggest emitters includes Latrobe Valley power generators International Power, TRUenergy and Loy Yang Power. He said the “principal incentive” of charging per tonne of output was “to bring about change”.”This is especially important in areas like the electricity generating sector as it will lead to cuts in pollution,” Mr Combet said.
