Australia needs to invest in renewable energy powered electric cars

Senator Milne believes the government needs to take direct action. She criticised the government’s decision to support the local car manufacturing industry via the defunct Green Car Innovation Fund. Senator Milne said the local industry remained focused on making petrol-powered six-cylinder vehicles.

“Investment in truly innovative car manufacturing in Australia would also see a shift towards electric cars, instead of paying companies to make slightly less inefficient six-cylinder petrol cars,” she said.

That’s the view of the Greens deputy leader, Christine Milne, who is calling on the government to do more to support electric vehicles.

“Electric cars powered by renewable energy are not only a critical part of the clean economy we need to build but they promote energy security in an age of peak oil,” Senator Milne said. “Studies in the US are showing that they will be an important way to stabilise the energy grid, acting like a giant shared battery.

“China has set an aggressive goal for expanding its electric car market and Australia is once again at risk of falling behind.”

Electric cars are becoming increasingly popular around the world as petrol prices rise. Despite governments offering financial and other incentives for consumers to buy electric cars, the Australian government does not believe that is the right way to go……
