Japanese farmers seek Australian help after nuclear nightmare, ABC RuralNews,  06/05/2011 Japanese farmers in the shadow of the failed nuclear power station are desperate for clean and safe Australian hay for their cattle.

The nuclear catastrophe after the tsunami has raised fear of contamination of meat, vegetables and fodder in the country’s north-east.Meat and Livestock Australia’s Japan manager, Melanie Brock, has met the farmers at Fukushima and says they’re very sad.

She says the chairman of the local agriculture co-operative told her he survived with what he stood up in, but lost staff from his business.”This fear of the radioactivity, he just seemed to be at a loss as to what advice to offer his people,” she said.”Agriculture is such a big part of that area.”……”MLA has invited a group of Japanese farmers to Australia next week for a barbecue in Sydney, to meet Australian beef producers and politicians.The group will be able to describe their plight, and what they need to continue farming.The BBQ brunch will be held to launch the Australian beef industry’s Together with Japan project on Saturday May 14, from 10 a.m. to early afternoon, at Dawes Point Park on Sydney Harbour.
