Electric cars will boost Australia’s renewable energy development

Australia group says Electric Vehicles charging can help jump-start renewables, Recharge,by Oliver Wagg, 13 june 11A nationwide electric vehicle (EV) charging network roll-out can act as a significant driver of renewable energy demand, says Better Place Australia after unveiling a landmark supply deal with the Australian Capital Territory’s utility ActewAGL.

The agreement, worth about A$60m over 10 years, is the largest renewable energy deal of its kind in Australia. Better Place Australia, the local offshoot of a three-year-old Silicon Valley startup, says electricity will be sourced from wind, hydro and solar sources. Chief financial officer Antony Cohen tells Recharge the company expects to drive renewable energy demand in Australia “progressively over time”…

.. Better Place Australia is betting on EVs being the biggest source of demand growth in the 2020s. Australia has abundant renewable resources, Cohen notes. Better Place plans to begin installation of its first charging network in Canberra later this year, then target cities and densely populated areas such as Queensland’s Sunshine and Gold Coasts.

As it rolls-out the network across the country, it will seek renewable energy deals with suitable suppliers.
