Nuclear industry “dead in the water”- poor outlook for WA uranium

“Nuclear has been around for a long time and there are fewer reactors now than there were five years ago.

“Nuclear is not a resurgent industry, the only people interested in this energy is uranium mining companies.

WA’s uranium industry – on shaky ground?, ABC News, 19 July 11,Louise Merrillees“…..Even in a pro-mining state, uranium mining has had a chequered past…… Greens MP Robin Chapple says nuclear energy is dead in the water.

In perhaps an ironic twist, the Member for the Mining and Pastoral Regions says that every single uranium mine proposed in WA is in his electorate ..

Mr Chapple is also addressing the conference about what he refers to as “nuclear ground hog day”….

“There is money to be made, because there is a market for it, but demand is dropping.”

‘Since Fukushima, countries are saying ‘we’re closing down our reactors’, look at Germany,” he said.

there is concern that political uncertainty at a state level is making resource companies hesitant to invest in WA.

“Certainly the price on the spot market had dropped dramatically; three to four companies are talking about putting their WA projects on the back burner.”…….

At the WA Labor State Party Conference in June, Opposition Leader Eric Ripper reiterated state labor’s anti-uranium stance….
