South Australia to ban uranium mining in Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary
Premier Mike Rann announces permanent protection for Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary, Herald Sun, By Greg Kelton and Sarah Martin , July 22, 2011 ARKAROOLA will be protected for all time from mining, South Australia Premier Mike Rann has announced during a visit to the wilderness sanctuary.
Mr Rann, who went to the region with Environment Minister Paul Caica and Mineral Resources Minister Tom Koutsantonis, said Arkaroola was unique, with sensitive environmental, cultural and heritage values.
“When I visited the stunning landscape last year, I found its beauty to be compelling, and asked Mr Caica and Mr Koutsantonis to examine options to protect it,” he said.
Under the plans announced, the Government will give the region unprecedented protection, initially under the Mining Act, but including legislation to specifically exclude mining, and giving clear and specific protection to the area.
Mr Rann said it would involve a three-step process, with the first step preserving the area from operation under the Mining Act by proclamation – preventing future exploration and mining titles being granted in the area.
This new legislation, to be introduced before the end of the year, will fully recognise the unique character of the region……..
The second step will be to enact special purpose legislation to protect the natural, cultural and landscape values of the area in perpetuity.
This will define the area under statute, prohibiting mining, mineral exploration and grazing in the ranges, but specifically provide for the public appreciation and enjoyment of the area, with recreational activities regulated by a strict management plan.
Mr Rann said the third step would be to nominate the area for listing on the National Heritage List, and seek to have it nominated for World Heritage listing….
