Uranium mining to remain illegal in New South Wales

“Uranium mining and exploration is prohibited under the Uranium and Nuclear Facilities (Prohibitions) Act 1986.”

‘No plans’ to lift NSW uranium ban  ABC Sydney – Australian Broadcasting Corporation August 01, 2011  The New South Wales Government is adamant it has no plans to overturn a state ban on uranium mining and exploration.

That is despite a meeting between Resources Minister Chris Hartcher and the Australian Uranium Association in June.

Association chief executive Michael Angwin has confirmed he used the meeting to lobby for the uranium ban to be lifted……

Mr Hartcher issued a brief statement this morning to rule out any change.

“The NSW Government has no plans to overturn the State’s ban on uranium mining and exploration,” Mr Hartcher said in the statement.

“Uranium mining and exploration is prohibited under the Uranium and Nuclear Facilities (Prohibitions) Act 1986.”

Greens MP Jeremy Buckingham says he is worried the Government is being too accommodating to the mining industry.

“This Government is looking a lot like the last government. They are certainly pro-mining,” Mr Buckingham said.

“We have seen that with coal, coal seam gas and now uranium mining, so it is of grave concern that they are turning NSW into one big quarry.”
