Liberal party’s truckin’ anti-carbon tax – a bit of a flop
Convoy of no confidence runs short on revs, The Age,,Richard, Willingham, August 23, 2011 ANOTHER sitting week in Parliament and another protest against the carbon tax, this time in the shape of the convoy of no confidence.
This was an angry crowd but a small one, with 300 people gathering on the Parliament lawns as 200 vehicles from all over Australia rolled around Canberra blowing their horns.
Protest organisers, Tony Abbott, Warren Truss and Barnaby Joyce shared the stage and spoke about the evils of the carbon tax, the poor handling of live exports and rising debt – calling for a fresh election……
Talkback king Alan Jones, in his role as master of ceremonies, attacked the media for not telling ”the truth of the story” on these issues. He claimed thousands more protesters were stranded away from the Parliament’s lawns because police had stopped them at the ACT border.
”Someone has instructed the federal police from stopping them going where they want to go,” he said……ACT police and organiser Mick Pattel said no trucks had been stopped at the border…..
A survey commissioned by grassroots activist group GetUp! has found that 71 per cent of people believe big polluters should pay for carbon emissions if the money is invested in renewable energy and to support households and industry transition to clean energy.
National director Simon Sheikh said it was proof that those at the protest did not represent the views of most Australians. …
Sixty-seven per cent said Australia had to do its fair share on climate action, even if others were not, while 83 per cent backed investing in clean energy.
