Muckaty nuclear waste dump film to open Berlin festival

– Beyond Nuclear, 16 Sept 11, Muckaty Voices, a short film outlining the campaign against a nuclear waste dump in the Northern Territory, will open the first exclusively Australian film festival in Berlin tomorrow morning (Friday evening Berlin time).
The “Down Under Berlin – Australian Film Festival” is directed by Sydney-born Frances Hill and organised by Australian and German volunteers.
Muckaty Voices was produced in 2010 by Enlightening Productions and the Beyond Nuclear Initiative, in collaboration with Muckaty Traditional Owners.
The Muckaty Land Trust is 120 km north of Tennant Creek in the NT. Legislation tabled by federal resources Minister Martin Ferguson is currently before the Senate, naming this area as the only site to be further assessed for a radioactive dump. This is despite public and ongoing opposition from a large number of Traditional Owners and the Northern Territory government.
The campaign has broad support, with national trade unions joining health, church and environment groups to oppose the plan. A federal court case is also underway contesting the Muckaty nomination.
Beyond Nuclear Initiative coordinator Natalie Wasley states, “Muckaty Voices puts a human face to the campaign against the nuclear waste dump. At previous screenings, international audiences have been shocked by the brazen disregard of Minister Martin Ferguson for the wishes of Traditional Owners and the NT government”.
“There is a strong history of actions in Germany opposing nuclear waste transports and we expect support for the Muckaty campaign will be greatly boosted by this screening. We thanks the festival organisers for choosing Muckaty Voices to open the event and we will continue to seek international fora to highlight the staunch opposition to the Muckaty waste dump plan”, Ms Wasley concluded.
