Australian Red Cross calls on young and old to rally against nuclear weapons

Australian Red Cross is holding a forum in Sydney on 22 September 2011. Junko Morimoto, a survivor of the Hiroshima atomic bomb, will be speaking along with Dr Durham, and Dr Ben Saul, Professor of International Law, University of Sydney. The forum starts at 6.30pm, at Mallesons Stephen Jaques’ offices in Sydney.

Push to ban nuclear weapons comes to Sydney, SOUTHERN COURIER, 21 SEP 11  Australian Red Cross has re-ignited the push for a ban on the use of nuclear weapons and is calling on young Australians from all walks of life to finish what their parents started. And now it’s bringing the debate to Sydney.

Today there are at least 20,000 nuclear weapons world-wide, around 3,000 of them on launch-ready alert. The potential power of these would roughly equate to 150,000 Hiroshima bombs.

‘If even one nuclear weapon was to be used, the humanitarian and environmental consequences would be devastating. A nuclear conflict would not only result in an enormous loss of life, but the destruction of huge tracts of land, mass starvation and the disruption of global food distribution,’ said Australian Red Cross’ Dr Helen Durham, Head of International Law and Principles.

Last month on Hiroshima Day (6 August 2011), Australian Red Cross launched its campaign calling for the use of nuclear weapons to be made illegal. It asks ‘Baby Boomers’ to reconnect with the cause that defined a generation in the 1960s and 70s, and calls for a whole new generation to get involved. An online referendum is underway, at www.targetnuclearweapons.org.au, and will be followed by a series of social media events building to a peak in November….. http://southern-courier.whereilive.com.au/news/story/push-to-ban-nuclear-weapons-comes-to-sydney/
