Australians walk to close our 59 year atomic nightmare

This was the beginning of the nuclear nightmare for Australia that led to numerous other tests being conducted in South Australia and an ongoing battle that is still being fought around the country to stop uranium mines from opening and to close those that are already supply uranium to this dirty, dangerous and costly industy.
This anniversary will see the “Walk away from Uranium Mining” that started from Wiluna on the 21st of August heading out from Southern Cross on their last 3 weeks of walking in to Perth to arrive at the CHOGM meeting that begins on the 28th of October.
59 years later we are still saying NO ,   www.nuclearfreefuture.com  Marcus Atkinson , 3 Oct ,  On October 3rd, 2011 we see the 59th anniversary of the first atomic Bomb blast in Australia.  This took place off the coast of Western Australia at the Montebello islands in 1952.
It was the first atomic bomb tested by the British Government and was a close copy of the Fat Man atomic bomb that was used by the United States on the city of Nagasaki.
The bomb used plutonium produced mainly at Windscale (now Sellafield) in Cumbria, UK with a low Pu-240 content since hurried production led to short irradiation times. However, Windscale could not quite meet the August 1952 deadline for manufacturing the inner core and the device also used some Canadian-supplied plutonium.

This was the beginning of the nuclear nightmare for Australia that led to numorous other tests being conducted in South Australia and an ongoing battle that is still being fought around the country to stop uranium mines from opening and to close those that are already supply uranium to this dirty, Dangerous and costly industy.

Western Australia has had a long history in this fight and again we see the nuclear industry trying to gain approvals from the government for uranium mines around the State.

Toro Energy is leading the charge with it’s proposed mine at Wiluna and other exploration is happening by numorous companies all through out the State.

This anniversary will see the “Walk away from Uranium Mining” that started from Wiluna on the 21st of August heading out from Southern Cross on their last 3 weeks of walking in to Perth to arrive at the CHOGM meeting that begins on the 28th of October.
Marcus Atkinson, Footprints for Peace Coordinator said ” The walk has been meeting with Traditional Custodians and communities along the way. We have learnt a lot and we have been moved by the pleas of people to leave the uranium in the ground. Many people have expressed not only their concerns for their own areas and sacred sites, but also for the damage it does when it leaves the country as has been witnessed by the communities around Fukushima”
