Poo Power: why not? – it’s cleaner than nuclear
Poo Power: from poultry waste to renewable energy,PhysOrg.com, February 7th, 2012 Using curbside, commercial and biowaste from its poultry industry, the City of Greater Bendigo is building a business case that could see the introduction of Australia’s first multiple stream waste to energy facility.
The economic and environmental initiative is being undertaken with the help of Masters students from the University of Melbourne Graduate School of Business & Economics.
The students will conduct a feasibility analysis on the project over the next fortnight….. The student project is part of the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Business & Economics Volunteer Business Practicum, a program that allows students to provide a genuine contribution to a business or community while gaining valuable work experience….. The students will work with the City of Greater Bendigo Council until mid-February, when they will present their findings to the council and their peers.

There is no moral or environmental justification in appeasing the battery hen business, the intensive farming behemoth or junk food advocates, Big Macs, Red Rooster et al. The environmental risks of this industry are well documented and they contribute significantly to a warming planet, regional pollution and the production of massive amounts of chicken manure in concentration.
I seem to recall that the US slaughters some 9 billion chickens every year and in Australia, food poisoning victims have increased to >5 million/year. Salmonella appears to be a major culprit. The majority of antibiotics sold in Australia are fed to livestock – predominantly chickens (every day) and resistant bugs are now a major problem. Even in Australia, patients are having limb amputations, a result of this calamity.
Incineration, I believe is taking evolution backwards. Burning produces unintended by-products including dioxins. The greatest blunder in this Australian project is engaging students specifically from the Graduate School of Business & Economics. Where are the toxicologists, the environmental scientists, the air quality experts?

There is one way to mitigate this cruel and dirty business. Eat fewer chickens but will we? No.
