This week Prime Minister Julia Gillard reshuffles cabinet in the wake of her resounding leadership victory. Let’s make sure she hears this urgent message: it’s time for Martin Ferguson to go.

As Minister for Resources and Energy, Fergo’s been closest friend to the fossil fuels industry and backroom blocker to a cleaner, smarter and cheaper future powered by renewables. By holding the back the government’s reforms, he’s letting Australia fall far behind in the global clean energy economy.

Right now we have one Minister for Energy, supporting the energy systems of the past, and another for Climate Change, supporting the future. That will never change with Martin Ferguson in the mix.

The PM can’t remove Fergo from cabinet altogether. He supported Rudd, and recriminations are a bad look, especially on such a factional power. And despite his dodgy ideas about energy and climate change, he’s a competent operator and could do much good in another portfolio.

But with Fergo as Energy Minister, no one can believe the Gillard government is serious about Australia’s ‘clean energy future’.
