Protest against NATO – USA veterans turn in their medals

Iraq vets to turn in medals at historic NATO protest, Deborah Dupre Human Rights Examiner, 18 May 12, After requesting a meeting with NATO leaders this week, Iraq Veterans Against the War and Afghanistan Veterans Against the War committee are gearing up to lead this weekend’s historic march on the NATO Summit in Chicago where veterans will symbolically turn in their medals to NATO reps.

“We were awarded these medals for serving in the Global War on Terror, a war based on lies and failed polices,” stated Army Reserve/National Guardsman who is leading the the former troops this weekend, Aaron Hughes…..

“We, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Global War on Terror veterans, from around the country will converge in Chicago to march to the NATO summit and ceremoniously return our medals to NATO generals,” Hughes says.

“This endless war has killed hundreds of thousands, stripped the humanity of all involved, and drained our communities of trillions of dollars, diverting funds from schools, clinics, libraries, and other public goods.”

IVAW announced in a written statement Friday, “We will be leading the Sunday march with our friends in Afghans for Peace to send a message to the world: no more resource wars, end the military occupation of Afghanistan, bring military dollars home to rebuild our communities, and acknowledge the humanity of those of us affected by war.

“At the end of the march we will symbolically turn in our medals to NATO reps,” the group confirmed……

Acheson, 27, said about this weekend’s protest, “I feel like this is a really good way for me to kind of, not clear my conscience, but just make a step in the direction of healing and kind of reconciling with the Afghan people and the Iraq people.
