Solar photovoltaic research at University of New South Wales
Australia-US institute for new photovoltaic technology, World
University News, 06 January 2013 An A$35 million (US$37 million)
grant from the Australian government has been allocated to the
University of New South Wales to create a US-Australian institute to
foster rapid development of “over the horizon” photovoltaic
technology.
Federal Minister for Resources and Energy Martin Ferguson announced
the grant as part of a raft of new programmes and projects through the
United States-Australia Solar Energy Collaboration, which is supported
by the Australian Solar Institute and the US National Renewable Energy
Laboratory.
The funding is part of an A$83 million commitment, one of Australia’s
biggest solar research investments.
The new institute, the US-Australia Institute for Advanced
Photovoltaics, or USAIAP, will be led by the University of New South
Wales’ (UNSW) photovoltaic researchers. It provides a pathway for
research collaboration between Australian and American centres and
agencies to drive innovation and commercialisation….. The
university’s school of photovoltaic and renewable energy engineering
holds the world record in silicon solar cell efficiency. The programme
leader, Professor Martin Green, said the new institute would establish
Australia as the photovoltaic research and educational hub of the
Asia-Pacific region. ….
