Racism is downplayed or swept under the carpet. People try to constantly make excuses such as, “incidents of racism are isolated” or,”it’s just a few individuals”  The fact is, it is just a few individuals that actually aren’t racists. The majority of Australians are racist. All of the institutions in Australia are racist, and everybody knows it except Australians. (Or they do, they just want to bury their heads in the sand and pretend it’s not happening)

I have spent my life being a second class citizen in my own country. My ancestors have been in this land for over 250,000 years. The government has spent the last 200 years trying to destroy us, just recently, through the so called “Intervention” This is where, the government comes onto our communities and tries to make Aboriginal people come under government control. For instance, at first the government wanted to bring the Australian Army in and make Aboriginal men undergo forced medical checks. However, they were afraid of the international backlash.

Now the government has just come in and make illiterate traditional owners sign 40 year land leases, so that the government “administer the land” and it can make deals with mining companies and logging companies to make millions of dollars off of Aboriginal land. The government knows that we are the sovereign people under International law and they just can’t acquire the land under the Australian constitution. This is why the Intervention came about in 2007, the Australian government suspended The Racial Discrimination Act (1975) so it could go into Aboriginal communities and enact racist laws that only affected Aboriginal people.
