CT not advisable for bone density scans, less radiation in alternative method

“The dose of radiation in QCT is significantly higher than DXA and … were being used in preference to DXA scans in some parts of Australia. Clinicians should continue to use DXA bone scans to diagnose and manage osteoporosis a recent communication advises.The correspondence from the Musculoskeletal Network arm of the NSW Agency for Clinical Innovation comes in response to the discovery that CT scans were being used in preference to DXA scans in some parts of Australia.
But after consulting experts in the field the network concluded that there was no evidence that CT scans were better than DXA.
