Westpac Bank cautiously promoting renewable energy

piggy-ban-renewablesWestpac focuses on renewables, Ecogeneration, 13 Dec 13, “In an exclusive excerpt from the February 2014 edition of EcoGeneration, Westpac Institutional Bank Director of Infrastructure and Utilities David Scrivener discusses the Bank’s approach to clean energy financing and the key things financiers look for when investing in clean energy projects……….Westpac is committed to financing the development of clean energy solutions and best practice pollution controls. Today, more than 50 per cent of our lending to the energy sector is to renewable energy generation, including hydro, wind and solar.

In February 2013, we announced a further commitment to make up to $6 billion dollars available for lending and investment to the clean technology and environmental services sector by 2017. Westpac proactively supports emerging sectors and companies using clean energy technologies that are making the transition to a carbon-constrained operating environment.

We also work with our customers’ clients to understand and manage environmental impacts. This has included the development of products like the Energy Efficient Equipment Lease to help institutional customers fund energy efficiency activities. We have also developed a free online workshop for small business and not-for-profits to identify and finance energy efficiency opportunities across their business………

Without additional support, such as Australian Renewable Energy Agency funding or feed-in tariffs, at the current black power/Renewable Energy Target (RET) price, it is difficult to see significant additional investment in solar projects on the east coast from developers and investors in the short-term……..

In the short term, realistically, I think the renewable energy market is likely to remain in a hiatus until the results of RET review are announced and some regulatory certainty returns.

Thereafter, investment will be determined by the ability of government to deliver clear, credible long term policies….http://ecogeneration.com.au/news/westpac_focuses_on_renewables/084704/
