The 197-turbine Ceres wind farm development located between Ardrossan and Minlaton will create 500 direct jobs during the construction phase and an expected  50 full time jobs over the 25 year service life of the facility.

“It is estimated that the wind farm will generate up to $8 million per year in local benefits, including important off farm income for host farmers,” said Minister for Planning John Rau.

“This is an industry worth more than $8 billion to South Australia and Labor is committed to ensuring that wind energy has a positive future in this State.”

Originally announced in 2011, the 600MW Ceres Project will generate enough power to supply 225,000 homes – over 2,000 GWh of annual production and representing 14 per cent of South Australia’s electricity demand.

Other benefits for the region include a $150,000 a year Community Benefit Fund for the life of the project to support community programs and a $50,000 a year fire-fighting fund for the Yorke Peninsula Country Fire Service and local farming community.

The facility will connect to Adelaide’s electricity grid via two HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) under-sea transmission cables running from Port Julia to St Kilda. It will be the first wind project in Australia to connect to a capital city in such a manner.

Expected to be fully operational in 2016, the Ceres Project will have the lowest turbine density of any wind farm in Australia and will further cement South Australia’s standing as Australia’s leading wind power state.

Senvion  (formerly REpower Australia), a Suzlon Group company, will manage the CERES project on behalf of the Group.Further details about the project can be viewed here.
The Clean Energy Council says approval of Ceres Wind Farm demonstrates how the national Renewable Energy Target is working.

“The Renewable Energy Target is due to be reviewed this year and, if left alone to do its job, will continue to provide an incentive for clean energy projects such as Ceres that provide hundreds of direct and flow-on jobs for the local economy,” said CEC Chief Executive David Green .

Trivia – the wind farm was named Ceres after a sail and steam ship that used to ferry goods between Yorke Peninsula and Adelaide directly across the Gulf of St. Vincent.
