For Coffs Harbour renewable energy is affordable and essential
Greens say there’s plenty of scope for renewable energy push http://www.coffscoastadvocate.com.au/news/is-clean-and-green-viable-local-greens-say-there-i/2209168/ 27th Mar 2014 IS CLEAN green energy viable or just a pipe dream?
According to Coffs Harbour Greens convener John Courcier, there is plenty of scope and merit to a push to shift NSW to renewable energy. He spent the weekend at a workshop in Sydney and now hopes to spread the good oil with locals.
“The key messages were that clean and sustainable energy from 100% renewable sources is possible, affordable and essential,” John said.
“The sooner we seriously start planning and moving towards renewable energy and away from relying on coal, the better for our environment, our economy and the family budget.”
John said that apart from giving details related to the transition from fossil fuels to 100% renewable energy, the workshop also highlighted the necessary actions and campaigning required to make politicians take notice.
“Many myth-busting facts were shared. For example, that investment in renewable energy will force up power bills,” he said.
“This was countered by the fact that 50% of the rise in power bills over the last few years is due to the over-investment in the distribution and transmission network, enabling distribution companies to ‘gold plate’ their wires and poles.”
Local Greens member Craig Christie said he was encouraged by the large number of jobs a renewable energy sector would support, many more than the current coal industry in New South Wales.
“What was not surprising, unfortunately, was the current lack of political vision required for implementing a strategic shift to renewable energy over the next few decades in New South Wales and Australia,” Craig said.
John said: “The Coffs Greens will make information available to local pollies, businesses and the public regarding the campaign.
“Workshops are planned over the coming months leading to the State election.
“The aim is to move to 100% renewable energy within a generation.”
