Australia missing its chance to lead on renewable energy

Chance to lead on renewable energy wasted: Professor, Sunshine Coast Daily,  Bill Hoffman | 18th Jul 2014 A FAILURE to foster innovation had seen Australia fritter away its opportunity to be a leader in renewable energy climate scientist Professor Tim Flannery said yesterday.

As a consequence he said some of our smartest minds had relocated overseas taking with them the innovations they had developed and the profits they generate.

Prof Flannery said the “lucky country” belief that mining would go on forever as the bedrock of our prosperity left him in despair and angry at lost opportunities.

He foresees a fundamental shift in the political order which would drive out those who believed increased productivity was the path to a sustainable future.

Prof Flannery said reform of the established economic order would be a natural flow on from the creation of truly democratic societies that would no longer tolerate those who had profited from a free ride on the exploitation of the environment.

He said while the timing remained unsure the mechanics made it inevitable that would lead to the complete melt of the west Antarctic ice sheet bringing with it an inevitable significant increase in sea levels.

The world had to get on top of its pollution by the end of the decade to avoid the equal inevitability of an unpleasant future for our children.

Prof Flannery said Member for Fairfax Clive Palmer had saved some valuable renewable energy infrastructure but the time had passed for small beginnings……..http://www.sunshinecoastdaily.com.au/news/chance-lead-renewable-energy-wasted-professor/2322684/
