If only all those building companies would build energy efficient homes that REDUCE the need for electricity – especially for hot water and for heating and cooling then home solar electricity generators would be able to export much more. The big hurdle to doing this is that the home owner has to pay the up-front costs for solar hot water, double glazing, insulation, etc. These electricity saving measures are the equivalent of electricity generators. Other electricity generators (power stations, wind-farms and now rooftop solar photovoltaics) don’t require the user to pay the up-front costs, these costs are recovered over decades, so why should their competitors have to pay up-front? If privatized electricity companies won’t do this then government needs to do it. If we want the oft-promised-but-never-delivered cheaper electricity then we need real competition in the electricity market.
