Solar energy to pay off for homes and farms
New solar scheme to shine on energy-efficient households THE LAND NICOLA BELL16 Nov, 2009 FARMS and households generating their own renewable energy will receive higher returns for the solar energy they generate under the new Solar Bonus Scheme announced by the NSW Government last Tuesday.
The scheme will pay a gross tariff of 60 cents a kilowatt an hour to owners of a solar power system for all electricity generated rather than payments based on what you don’t use.
Due to start on January 1, next year the scheme is proposed to run for seven years and is the highest gross feed-in tariff in Australia. The NSW Government said the reasons for introducing the scheme were to encourage and support those who wanted to act on climate change and to help solar energy to compete with non-renewable energy sources.
On average the changes will mean an average family with roof-top solar panels will be paid about $1496 a year, which is a 62 per cent increase on the previous proposed scheme.
