Call for Australia to get out of the nuclear cycle

The team at ICAN – International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons 5 April 2010
We Australians often like to think of ourselves as a peace-loving nation.
However, as long as we continue to supply uranium to nuclear weapon states around the world, the perception of Australia as being benign in global affairs is an illusion.
The threat of nuclear weapons is as real today as it has ever been – yet Australia is in danger of setting itself up as uranium supplier to the world.

Current moves by the Rudd government to open the door to uranium sales to Russia would see us supplying the raw ingredients for bomb fuel to a nuclear weapon state whose nuclear security is poor, whose facilities are off-limits to international inspectors, and whose record on disarmament is woeful.

Today in China, anti-nuclear activist Sun Xiaodi languishes in a forced labour camp for his ongoing efforts to expose corruption in China’s nuclear industry. Australia is currently opening up massive new uranium markets to China – another nuclear weapon state intent on building up its nuclear arsenal.

This May in New York, the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference will provide the best ever opportunity to fast-track the goal of abolishing nuclear weapons once and for all. With a President in the White House committed to abolishing nuclear weapons, and a growing groundswell of public pressure worldwide, now is the best window of opportunity we have ever had to abolish these weapons.

On June 5 this year, thousands of people across the world will take part in coordinated actions to mark Nuclear Abolition Day <http://t.ymlp105.com/jearamuqapamhwmapajeb/click.php> . With your help and passion, the day will result in the world agreeing to a Nuclear Weapons Convention – a timetable towards abolition.

If you can help by starting a rally in your area or chipping in $20 or more towards our global campaign <http://t.ymlp105.com/jmapamuqaramhwmagajeb/click.php> , we can beat the threat of nuclear weapons worldwide.

That would be the best gift this generation could give to the next.
