Mr Brown was commenting after completing a trip to Central Australia.

He says the disposal of nuclear medical waste is the responsibility of the cities concerned.

“If you’re going to have medical wastes generated by the big cities for the service of the big populations in the big cities then find a place in the proximity of those big cities which, if we’re told it’s safe and can be safely stored where it’s put, don’t dump it in a centre of a great continent.”

Mr Brown also says a proposed uranium mine on the outskirts of Alice Springs would damage the tourism industry in the Northern Territory.

He says a short-term uranium mine would have long-term repercussions for the region.

“Who would want [or] allow in Sydney or Melbourne a uranium mine within the outer fringes of their suburbs,” he said.
