Australia at the Nuclear Non Proliferation Conference
as ever, Australia agrees with promoting nuclear technology. Australia keeps its focus on its own lucrative role, as uranium supplier, in the global nuclear cycle which makes nuclear weapons possible.
The U.N Nuclear Non Proliferation Conference in New York looks like becoming something of a non event. The big powers, especially USA and Russia have still got thousands of nuclear warheads. The U.S Senate probably won’t back Obama’s efforts to reduce them. Iran is creating havoc, in defiance of international calls to give up its enriched uranium, and its probable nuclear weapons project. Israel remains silent on its own nuclear weapons.
And yet – with the USA’s openness about its nuclear weapons stockpile, and the commitment of so many thousands of people to the abolition of nuclear weapons – there is evidence of goodwill, even at the U.N conference level – towards that goal.
Australia’s part in the U.N conference? Well, what did you expect? Australia toes the USA line – does the ritual walkout with the big powers. Australia refuses to back its own Commission’s call for disarmament. And, as ever, Australia agrees with promoting nuclear technology. Australia keeps its focus on its own lucrative role, as uranium supplier, in the global nuclear cycle which makes nuclear weapons possible.
