Pacific leaders criticise US over atomic legacy, ABC Radio Australia News, Sean DorneyL 6 Aug 2010, Leaders of the Pacific Islands Forum have taken the United States to task over the lasting impact of its nuclear tests in the Marshall Islands.

The leaders may write to President Barack Obama urging the US to provide more money to victims of nuclear contaminants in the Marshalls.
The United States exploded 67 nuclear bombs in the Marshall Islands between 1946 and 1958 in tests conducted while the Marshalls was being administered by the US as a United Nations Trust Territory.

At their meeting in Vanuatu, the Leaders of the Pacific Islands Forum said the continued presence of radioactive contaminants in the Marshall Islands meant the US still had a special responsibility towards its people who continue to be adversely affected.

Leaders have repeated a call on the United States to live up to what they call its full obligations on the provision of adequate compensation, safe resettlement and returning affected areas to economic productivity.

They have also called on all members of the Forum to support the Marshall Islands on this issue at the United Nations General Assembly and before the United Nations Security Council.
