Nuclear power raised at Brisbane politicians’ forum

The issue of nuclear power as a clean energy fuel source stirred the candidates….Mr Bartlett explicitly rejected the idea

No debate dramas for Brisbane candidates, Brisbane Times, Tony MooreAugust 18, 2010 –  Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott may have spent days bickering about another election debate, but there were no such problems for the three major candidates for the seat of Brisbane.

The contestants for the inner-city electorate were last night put on the spot by about 100 people at a conservation forum at a Brisbane cafe.

Sitting Labor member Arch Bevis, the LNP’s Teresa Gambaro and Greens candidate Andrew Bartlett took part in the event organised by three environmental groups……….

The issue of nuclear power as a clean energy fuel source stirred the candidates.

Mr Bartlett explicitly rejected the idea, describing it as the “wrong debate” for Australia.

Mr Bevis also dismissed the proposal and revealed he was once a member of the Campaign Against Nuclear Power, while Ms Gambaro said her party had no current policy on the nuclear industry.

The ALP allows uranium mining and exportation to countries who have signed the nuclear non proliferation pact.

At the 2007 election the Coalition said Australia “should not reject the possibility of adding nuclear power to our long-term energy mix” and that a Coalition government would “remove Commonwealth legislative impediments to a nuclear industry and set up a rigorous regulatory framework”.

Audience members also asked why solar rebates are not uniform across Australia,…
Mr Bartlett said an example in China where a carbon levy on coal output funded renewable energy research was similar to Greens policy.
