Exposing banks that fund nuclear and coal

Bright sunshiny day | Greenpeace International, jmiller – October 21, 2010 , Talk about a global day for climate action! As the sun light started to shine on the Pacific Ocean this morning, a bright day started for the future of the planet and activists around the world challenged dirty energy and highlighted the benefits of a clean and renewable future.

Starting in Australia, our activists rebranded one of the nation’s largest banks, which is also the biggest financer of dirty and dangerous coal in the country, as part of a major campaign targeting the finance for new coal power and calling for banks to leverage their huge lending power to accelerate the clean energy revolution.

As the planet continued to turn and the day broke in India, we took action to show that while coal is the problem, renewables are the solution, with the Climate Rescue Station (CRS) being launched in the state of Bihar. Bihar is India’s third most populated state, where more than half the people live below the poverty line and have no or little access to energy.

Greenpeace and other organizations have been traveling the state on a mission to help mobilize village representatives, youth leaders and local collectives to demand quick, quality access to sustainable power that can be delivered through local renewable energy solutions. A report documenting successful renewable energy projects in Bihar and their impact on peoples lives shows how this can be done.

The CRS is in Bihar to show how much progress has been made already and build more support for renewable energy from local groups. Already we have gathered “votes for Renewable Energy” from a representation of more than a million people.

A few hours later, while europe was still waking up, Greenpeace activists took the chance to deliver another hit to dirty and dangerous energies. In a number of European countries, they called on the international bank BNP Paribas to “stop radioactive investments”, including its plans to fund an obsolete, dangerous nuclear reactor in Brazil, Angra 3.

Following a campaign that started on October 16 – when volunteers started putting posters up around BNP branches and ATMs asking the public “Do you know what your bank does with your money?”, –  our French activists used a BNP decorated armoured truck to deliver millions of fake ‘radioactive BNP-Paribas notes’ to AREVA’s  headquarters, the company that is building Angra 3, exposing the nuclear link between the two. The money that BNP plans to use to finance this dangerous project comes from its clients, but most of them are not aware of that.

And that’s not all we’ve got planned for today……

Get in on the action!
