Western Australia’s Greens will maintain anti-nuclear policy

The WA Greens say the party would be concerned if the Labor Party reneged on its long held opposition to uranium mining, when it reopens the debate at next year’s state conference.

Greens concern on Labor’s uranium stance – ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation), 29 Oct 10, Greens MP Robin Chapple  is concerned WA could have two major parties with a pro-nuclear, pro-uranium stance. The WA Greens say the party would be concerned if the Labor Party reneged on its long held opposition to uranium mining, when it reopens the debate at next year’s state conference.

The Labor leader Eric Ripper told the ABC yesterday a new set of circumstances has been created by the current Government which is poised to approve the development of a mine.

Mr Ripper says his party must now respond to the new circumstances.

The Greens MP Robin Chapple says any potential shift is a worry for the health of West Australians and the welfare of the state’s pastoral industry.

“Should the state Labor Party change its position on uranium mining in the state we would have some concern, in essence we would be left with two major parties following the pro-nuclear, pro-uranium stance,” he said……
