South Australian govt weak on protecting Arkaroola from uranium mining

Among opponents is Liberal powerbroker Nick Minchin, who believes Arkaroola’s outstanding environmental and heritage values must be protected by a ban on mining.

But the licence renewal, for 12 months rather than the two-year period sought by Marathon, is subject to consultation on stricter operating conditions.The project in the highly prospective Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary in the northern Flinders Ranges has been mired in controversy since 2008, when the Rann government indefinitely suspended the licence after Marathon was found to have breached conditions by burying waste at the mine site.

Among opponents is Liberal powerbroker Nick Minchin, who believes Arkaroola’s outstanding environmental and heritage values must be protected by a ban on mining.

And Greens MP Mark Parnell yesterday said “anything less than a complete ban on drilling into the future will mean weaker, not stricter, operating conditions”.

A Marathon spokesman said the company “will immediately commence consultation with the government on the terms and operating conditions of the renewed licence”…
