The former chief justice of the Family Court in Australia, Alastair Nicholson, has launched a Statement on Aboriginal Rights by leading Australians before a group of respected Northern Territory elders who are visiting Melbourne for the event.
ALASTAIR NICHOLSON: Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory must have choice and must not be forced to abandon their lands and heritage in order to obtain services that are automatically provided to other Australians.
We accordingly call upon the Government to start afresh, to comply with our international obligations by bringing the Northern Territory Intervention to an end, including the termination of involuntary income management…….
Former prime minister, Malcolm Fraser, is among those to sign the statement.
MALCOLM FRASER: There is absence of equality and respect, which is especially demonstrated by the continuing policies of income management. I can imagine no policy more demeaning to any person…………
