Australia’s smug drift into anti science

the authority of science has come under challenge……In no Western country, again with the exception of the US, is the political force of climate change denialism as potent as it is in Australia….This is an inherently unstable political situation…. Unless the mood of national complacency is successfully challenged, the victor in this battle seems certain to be Tony Abbott.

Threat of the new Australian smugness, Sydney Morning Herald, Robert Manne, May 2, 2011, Our leaders encourage a mood of self-satisfaction in which the nation’s goodness and wisdom are beyond question.

IT IS frequently difficult to notice the very thing that is in front of one’s nose. In almost every speech delivered on days of national significance by Tony Abbott but also Julia Gillard, in almost every editorial published on such days in the mainstream press, what is most striking is the mood of national self-congratulation and self-satisfaction they express. For a quarter century or more virtually all climate scientists have warned that unless nations radically and speedily reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases the kind of environment on Earth that gave birth to human civilisation will be gravely threatened or even destroyed. Despite these plain warnings, emissions have continued to increase.

In turn, as the failure of both international and national action has become increasingly obvious, the argument that the problem of climate change does not really exist has grown stronger. For the first time since Darwin’s challenge to religion, the authority of science has come under challenge.

This is an inherently unstable political situation. A battle for the future of Australia – on one side Labor and the Greens, the partners of a tense, forced marriage; on the other an increasingly strident populist conservative Coalition under the leadership of Tony Abbott – will be fought out over the next two years.

…….. Unless the mood of national complacency is successfully challenged, the victor in this battle seems certain to be Tony Abbott.
