Martin Ferguson endorses new Australian pro nuclear spin centre
The aim of New England Nuclear Energy is to gain enough support to change NSW legislation created in 1986 which prohibits nuclear facilities from being constructed or operated.
Nuclear centre opens, The Glen Innes Examiner AMY SLESSOR, 09 Aug, 2011 ,NEW England Nuclear Energy opened its Research, Education and Discussion Centre on Saturday morning.
The opening was at 8.15.43 seconds to coincide with the anniversary of the Hiroshima atomic bombing to show how far nuclear had come since that day, according to New England Nuclear Energy principal Howard Eastwood.
A countdown was held at the opening and Mr Eastwood said it was to look at how much research had been done on nuclear power since and what the benefits are for nuclear power as an alternative energy source.
About 30 people attended on Saturday, with Liberal Party Duty MLC for Northern NSW Scot MacDonald officially opening the centre.
The aim of New England Nuclear Energy is to gain enough support to change NSW legislation created in 1986 which prohibits nuclear facilities from being constructed or operated.
So far 27 people have showed support for an application for investigation and possible establishment of a nuclear plant in our region.
Mr Eastwood says he hopes another 3680 will sign to try and change the legislation…..
During the opening there was a protest against the idea of a nuclear power plant in our region.
“I wasn’t expecting the reaction we had,” Mr Eastwood said…..
Federal Resources Minister Martin Ferguson said there was still a “lively” debate around nuclear energy in Australia, but the community needed to make a decision.
“Every country is assessing the safety of their nuclear capacity (post-Fukushima) because they know in the context of energy security and the requirement to reduce emissions they have no alternative.”
“Nuclear may eventually have to fill the gap in Australia’s growing electricity demand.
“If they (clean renewable energy sources) don’t produce base-load reliable energy at a reasonable cost, then Australia at a point is going to have to make a tough decision about what is the best source of clean energy,” Mr Ferguson said.
There is also a Facebook page called New England Nuclear Energy for people to show their support.
