Warren Mundine helping uranium mining companies to get Aborigines off their land?
Cut land councils, says Warren Mundine PATRICIA KARVELAS THE AUSTRALIAN MAY 01, 2014 TONY Abbott’s top adviser on indigenous affairs has called for the reform of land rights and the slashing of the number of land councils with gatekeeper powers over development.Prime Minister’s Indigenous Advisory Council chairman Warren Mundine also called for an end to the requirement to establish a continuous connection with land to establish native title, arguing it “discourages indigenous people from moving away”.
In an address to the West Australian Chamber of Minerals and Energy, Mr Mundine attacked green groups for holding up indigenous development.
“I’m not aware of one new development project in mining, energy or infrastructure that has been supported by green groups,’’ he said yesterday…….http://www.theaustralian.com.au/national-affairs/policy/cut-land-councils-says-warren-mundine/story-fn9hm1pm-1226901405997#

I’m lost. The indiginious are required to live on their land physically to have a “continuous connection?” They can’t be absentee landowners?

I am pretty sure that this is the case – off the land, they lose their traditional owner rights

Wow…
That’s a rather pathetic title isn’t it?

Oh. OK, I’m in California and was just interested.
Seems a strange way to run a railroad. You are kind of enslaved to the land, no?
Why can’t you move off but still be a title holder?

It’s a long story – but in brief, it is part of the long dispossession of Aboriginal land. They were allowed to live on land that was thought to be useless, in this water-short, largely desert country. Australia used to run “on the sheep’s back” in the past. Since then it runs on “dig it up and ship it out”. That’ s still working for coal and iron ore. But uranium is available in previously “useless” country. The task is to get rid of those pesky Aborigines – many of whom have not yet been bought off, and have the cheek to want to preserve their environment. More recent Australian governments have used various tactics, from character assassination to bribery, to get Aborigines out of the way of the uranium industry, and indeed of all mining industry.

Ahh.
I’d be happy if they were free to move as they would choose, but still maintain title.

great comment, and great song and music, Thanks.
But – how sad that Peter Garrett has fallen – now part of a political party Labor – that joins with Liberal in the aim to dump radioactive trash on Aboriginal land.
