The SA government’s Treasurer, Tom Koutsantonis, wants governments to fund new electricity connections between states instead of burdening households with the costs (The Advertiser 11/10/16).
And who are going to be the biggest users of such infrastructure ? You guessed it, not the average householder, but electricity intensive heavy industry and mining. And who will have to subsidise the infrastructure ? The average householder and small business, through government taxes and ‘levies’.
This cross-subsidy will be a tax-payer funded incentive for energy guzzlers and a disincentive for energy efficient alternatives.
A more energy and cost efficient scheme would be to promote increased self-sufficiency through distributed electricity generation, which would have the great advantage of being less liable to the sort of massive disruption to electricity supply that we saw two weeks ago.
Koutenomics has had its chance and been found wanting, time to move on.
