Nuclear dump now South Australia 2018 election issue

“We supported the royal commission and we have worked, I think diligently and enthusiastically over the past two years looking at this project,” Mr Marshall said.
“Jay Weatherill’s dream of turning South Australia into a nuclear waste dump is now dead.”That death knell was sounded on Sunday when the citizens’ jury handed their final report to the Premier.”
Mr Marshall has just returned from a trip to Finland, where he toured a nuclear waste facility there.
But he said the Finland process started in 1978, and was still not complete.
“Nothing that I saw while I was in Helsinki waylaid my concerns regarding the future financial viability of this project,” Mr Marshall said.
“What we know from the investigation here in South Australia was taxpayers were going to have to foot a bill of maybe $600–800 million before a decision on this project was ever even made.”
Nuclear dump now 2018 election issue: Opposition
Mr Marshall said he would take an anti-nuclear stance to the next election. “Quite frankly, I’m very pleased with this decision by the Premier. I think this will now become the defining issue of the 2018 state election,” he said.
“Jay Weatherill wants South Australia to become a nuclear waste dump. Now I have much greater ambition for our state.”…….
Greens push for ditching of nuclear dump
But the Premier said he would continue public consultation.
“There are many tens of thousands of South Australians who have decided to reach out to us and express their views and of course we still have very considerable material first to be considered and discussed,” he said.
“The Labor Party has not yet determined its position. The Government has not yet determined its position in relation to this matter.”
State Greens leader Mark Parnell said the Premier must now ditch the dump.
He said the proposition of a nuclear dump was destined to fail…….“Yes the Premier might want to wait till a few of those other processes are finished, but the result is not going to change.”
Environmentalists and traditional owners have also handed over a combined 35,000 signatures to the Premier, calling him to end any plans for the dump.http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-11-11/opposition-says-it-will-vote-against-sa-nuclear-waste-dump/8016818

Zoom webinar – “Nuclear Winter: The Environmental Consequences of a Nuclear Exchange.”

Nuclear Winter: The Environmental Consequences of a Nuclear Exchange”

Join us for an informative webinar with renowned atmospheric scientist, Professor Brian Toon, as he discusses the environmental risks and global impacts of a nuclear war. Despite the potential damage caused by the blast from even small nuclear weapons, many countries continue to invest in and expand nuclear arsenals. Professor Toon will provide a scientific assessment of civilian fatalities, agricultural failures, climate concerns, and complications with food supply that would follow any international nuclear conflict. We need to plan how to prevent nuclear conflict and avoid catastrophe. Politicians and military planners must be made aware of global climate and agricultural complications that would ensue. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from, and engage in, this vital conversation

The Road to War brings a sharp focus to why it is not in Australia’s best interest to be dragged into a war with China which will almost inevitably go nuclear very quickly. The filmmaker has interviewed some of Australia’s senior foreign policy analysts who have vast experience behind them in analysing what really is going on here as the United States rattles its sabres with China. And sets us up to be its proxy, like the poor Ukranians have been fed into the Meatgrinder. So America can remain the Top Dog. The Road to War reveals how the United States through its spy base at Pine Gap and by stationing six nuclear capable B52 bombers in the Top End (without permission from the traditional owners) is making Australia a prime nuclear target if the current war of words suddenly melts down into full scale war.
The Road to War shows the implicit connection between Carbon emissions (the US military uses a whopping 70% of America’s annual petroleum to move its armies and vast War Machine around the globe to its 800+ military bases..but under a loophole wangled at Kyoto, the US military does not have to report its C02 annual emissions). The Road to War starts screening at selected cities and regional centres in March. See the trailer end for details.
