The photo in this article demonstrates my concern about centralized solar installations. I find the trend to clearing large areas of land for solar installations, thermal and electric, disconcerting.
Solar energy is already distributed and can be harnessed at, or close to, the site where it is used. Clearing large areas of land and then having to distribute the electricity to where it is used seems to me regressive. There are still many roofs that can be utilized for solar thermal and solar electricity and very little is being done to reduce energy demand especially in buildings.
The $/MW price of wind turbines decreases markedly as the size increases but the same is not true of solar photovoltaic panels.
